Laundry on an Italian Line - Naples

While adventuring around the Mediterranean with my new friends, I pointed out how hard it is to get someone actually hanging their laundry on the line. My friends took heaps of photos of laundry drying on various Mediterranean lines, and Carol took it upon herself to try to capture someone in the act. I think she managed to get someone eventuall.

So, while looking at all the laundry pics I took, I found this one this morning. Carol, look to the very top left of the shot. I didn't even notice the woman hanging her clothes until now! LOL - see, it's actually all so easy!

This is my favourite (and probably only) laundry photo. It was taken outside of Mulago hospital in Kampala, Uganda and it is of people drying linens for their family members who are in the hospital. Not even a laundry line but cleaner whites than I ever get.

So many people around the world dry their laundry like this. I took tonnes of photos just like this when I was in Bangladesh, but my rolls of film were stolen from my bag at the airport. I was devestated! Do any of you have photos with laundry drying on the ground like this? How does the cotton dry so clean on the ground?

And yes, technically these prayer flags are not laundry but they are beautiful so I had to include them here.
Celina says, "This is what happened when unsuspecting boys allow girls to stay for weeks at a time in their home - long enough that eventually laundry had to be done and inevitably hung to dry in the livingroom!?!?!? Sorry Tigerman!!!"

These come from a good friend in NYC who took the photos in China town there. The good news is that I have a tonne of photos to post soon. Another friend has been taking photos in Argentina, and a co-worker has been to Italy, another co-worker to Thailand, and I got some photos in Windsor with my good friend Su this weekend.

So we are back in the laundry action, despite a slow month. I think we were all just dragging our feet waiting for Easter!

I have to tell you that these entries absolutely crack me up. I think it's hysterical that people are still posting their pictures onto my blog, and in particular that people are telling the stories that come with them. The irony as well is that I know more Aussies in London than Brits and this is still my first Aussie post. Unless I've forgotten one, but I don't think so. Anyway, these come from Rob, who says:

How much fun are these?!!!! You can not even imagine just how low I've been feeling about this whole blog world lately. Now that I am no longer blogging about my personal life I really miss it! I mostly miss coming to all my friends blogs though. In 6 months time I will have a computer with the internet and I will be back. In the meantime, I am SO happy that you folks are still actually contributing to this site, even without my harrassment!

I can't wait for spring to really land in London. I had my windows open on the weekend and loved the fresh air in my tiny little flat. Soon the city will be covered in laundry hanging in the spring air. Perhaps the lets will draw some more of the laundry in Turkey. :-)

These photos are from Keda from one of my favourite blogs, Mama Hog 'N' the Lets. I have been harrassing her for months for her laundry images as I knew she would have some goodies, and I am happy to post them here!

She says these "are from gumusluk in southern turkey. while the lets were still in nappies we used washable ones, with poppers or velcro and had to handwash them while we were down there on holiday as our apartment had no machine. well luckily our maid did. after i'd got rid of and showered the majority of the gunk down the loo first, that was my part of the deal. but i never regretted it for a second. though she may have. and the nappies looked lovely on the line. i can't believe i don't have anypictures of the pink and yellow gingham ones though. so silly what you forget to capture. i hope you are well dear one. .kisses.k*" Thanks Keda!

Laundry on a Manhatton Skyline

My co-worker took this in New York last week. She says that she was standing on the Brooklyn Bridge when she looked out and saw laundry drying on a New York line. She was so excited, but when she zoomed in, the picture lost the whole skyline and therefore the beauty that is the photo itself. So, here's a challenge to you: Can you spot the laundry on a Manhatton skyline?

Laundry on a Barcelona Line

Amazingly enough, this photo was caught on a bus riding past the Sagrada Familia which is the first photo in this post. You can imagine the delight of seeing this stunning building and then looking up to see my first Barcelona laundry!

A more realistic photo of laundry in Barcelona, and anywhere else in urban centres for that matter.

Around every street corner in the Gothic District is a laundry rack like this one. I am so envious of all the balconies there. If I lived in Barcelona, I would definitely want one of these racks and heaps of plants on my balcony. And a push bike for sure.

Carolina took this photo from below the rack here. She was so excited to get knickers and bras from below. A first for this site I think!

"I'm not sure if this style of clothes line is found other than in New Zealand and Australia. Most homes have them here, they rotate so you can stand in one spot and hang all the laundry out."

And yes Catherine, we do have those lines here. I think it's a British thing actually, but I've always thought that my Kiwi friends were more British than the Brits themselves. I love this style of line - it makes it so easy to get your clothes off and on. The only problem is the space - you need a yard for this, which of course makes sense seeing as you are in a land with heaps of space. (Can I come? London is feeling very cramped right now)

While we are on the subject of different styles of clothes lines, I would love to get a photo on here of laundry that's hanging between buildings. Like in Italy or Chicago or something. You know the kind - where the neighbours agree to hang a line between their flats because they have no space, but the air space between them is just enough to hang out some clothes.

Anyone out there have such a picture they want to post? It's a pretty good day to have laundry from New Zealand on here, so let's keep 'em coming!

Laundry on an Ottawa Valley Line

So here it is. The original inspiration for this blog - the laundry line at my friend's farm in the Ottawa Valley. I spent most of my childhood on this farm. Now they have a pool and the goats and chickens are all long gone. But the laundry line is still there.

I couldn't help but show you this stuff! Bag balm is now being sold as a moisturizing cream for humans, but this is honestly the same stuff we used on the cows. I found this jar in my friend's bathroom, right next to her toothbrush.

I love the farm. How about you? Any more pictures of your laundry you care to post?

Laundry on a Finnish Line Part Two

This one comes from Bruce and I love it. Here's his story about his knickers on the line: "Here ya go Vickie, the other "Laundry on a Finnish Line" I promised you... I only had packed for a three day trip, thus being the fourth day and having had worn these clothes for a couple of days, they were ready to be washed. So the story goes that we (Tia, her brother Tomi and her dad) are alone in this place and I, without hesitation, stripped to my birthday suit and hand washed these in the lake, beating them against the large granite rock the formed the basin for the lake. It was quite refreshing spending so many hours in the buff, in broad daylight, not a care in the world, not many places in this world that you can do that without being eaten by bugs or bugged by people. This place felt soulful. Clothing didn't matter here, certainly not in a perverse sense, it was a truly spiritual place, naked before the world and the heavens above."

Thank you and thank Tia for me too - her socks rock. I love that you that you guys went from the States to Finland and remembered to take pictures of your laundry. My co-worker just got back from Australia and she apparently took pictures for me to post here. And don't forget to send me your laundry pic's from NZ as well. I just went to my home town in the Ottawa valley and took a picture of the original laundry line that inspired my love for watching laundry dry outside. There was this beautiful humming bird flying around it, but sadly it was too quick for my camera.

I have to say that all these people posting their great pics with laundry themes has really made my week that much more enjoyable. I actually laugh out loud every time I get a good one. I guess I should actually do some of my own laundry this weekend. Ugh. It's not actually doing the laundry that I enjoy - just seeing it on the line. The end, not the means.

Although when I worked in the rainforests of Costa Rica I lived with this amazing Guyanese woman that beat her laundry on the rocks in order to get out every last speck of dirt. I tried to learn from her, but let's face it. I sucked at it. I felt like the grimy gringa that I'm sure the clean Costa Ricans thought I was. But the Guyanese girl - she took about 10 minutes per shirt, and always came out sparkling clean and ready to go to the local pub for a party. My whites were just meant to be grey.
